Anecdotes are popularly used in hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Milton Erickson is considered one of the most important representatives of hypnosis. He was known for using anecdotes as an entry technique into hypnosis. He jumped from one topic to another and gave some anecdotes. The goal was to confuse the client so that he would find it harder and harder to listen consciously and eventually just shut down. The client then soon goes into a light trance and so what was said can really take effect. He can decode metaphors and put them into context for himself. In the long term, this can dissolve previously stable thought patterns and thus create new solution possibilities and ideas in hypnosis.
