Symptoms of Decision-making anxiety

How to recognize if hypnosis can support your decision-making process

The fear of making the wrong decision is known as an anxiety disorder in professional circles under the term Decidophobia and especially it is known to many people from everyday life also in lighter forms, but no less stressful:
Most people find it difficult to make decisions. What are the right shoes to go with my new dress? What kind of car do I want to drive and is the new job the right one for me? For most of these decisions we can get advice from friends or specialists. Yet rarely enough are these decisions truly far-reaching, and almost always they are reversible. The new car can be sold again, the new shoes can easily be replaced by other, even more fabulous ones, and yes, even a marriage can be dissolved again. The decision whether or not to have a child, however, is irreversible. Once the child is born, it is a decision for life. If the decision is delayed too long, the moment inevitably comes when it is too late. This applies, by the way, if we are honest and fair, for men as well as for women.

Decision anxiety shows itself in people through different symptoms and reactions on a physical and psychological level:

Physical Symptoms
In decidophobia there are physical symptoms: In addition to abdominal pain, affected people also suffer from sweaty palms, rapid heartbeat or palpitations, dizziness, nausea, sweating, circulatory problems, strong tension in the body. This state of anxiety can further increase to a panic attack and occurs in people affected by decidophobia even during daily decisions. Major decisions can then also lead to immense suffering - sleep disturbances, loss of appetite or the opposite, ravenous hunger attacks are not uncommon.
Psychological Symptoms
Psychologically, the fear of making the wrong decision is manifested by strong feelings of insecurity and a great sense of being overwhelmed. This can also become apparent in a restaurant: The choices put those affected under a lot of pressure, as they want to make the right decision. This excessive demand can quickly lead to panic and a strong, inner restlessness. In the case of major decisions - life decisions - such as the question of starting a family, worrying thoughts in view of the decision can lead to depressive moods and mood swings, as well as avoidance and withdrawal in order not to expose oneself to the situation. Avoidance strategies can be fatal because they have a tendency to spread to other areas of life and become chronic.

Hypnosis for decision-making anxiety

A large number of my clients have been dealing with the question of whether or not to have children for a long time. For many of you, the question is becoming more and more difficult, you are less and less able to listen to your feelings and it is difficult for you to access your innermost desires. Just as the pressure for many becomes greater and greater and the uncertainty increases. So many come to my hypnosis practice with the desire to make a decision for themselves and also as a couple. Experience shows that hypnosis sets something in motion that lies deeper. Positive changes and an access to themselves feel most already in the first session what can grow in the next days and weeks more and more and become clearer.

Decision-making anxiety self-test

Do I suffer from decision-making anxiety or decidophobia?

The following questions may be initial clues as to whether you suffer from decision anxiety:
  • 1

Do you experience isolated episodes of intense anxiety that start suddenly?
  • 2

Are you afraid to take on the responsibility or consequences?
  • 3

Experience any of the following symptoms: increase in heart rate and palpitations, sweating, trembling, and dry mouth.
  • 4

Do you feel overwhelmed by choices at crucial moments, doubt yourself, or get easily rattled by high hopes and expectations?
  • 5

Do you have the impression that you withdraw or avoid certain situations and conversations?
If you can answer yes to one or more of these questions and feel restricted in your daily life and living, you should seek medical or therapeutic advice. You may have decidophobia - the fear of making the wrong decision. Please note that questions are always asked broadly, so it is possible that even people who are not affected by decidophobia may get a positive result. Not everyone who frequently can't decide right away suffers from decidophobia.

Decision anxiety causes

Decision-making anxiety: the source of the fear

But how do decision-making fears arise? Most of the time, people have problems making decisions when they fear that they might make the wrong decision. This fear can be a big fear because they want to avoid the consequences and the responsibility. This puts many sufferers in a difficult situation and dilemma: positive and negative points can be chosen for each side and so sufferers get confused and become more insecure, making the decision harder and harder. Making the perfect and right decision is almost impossible! Often behind the fear of making the wrong decision is also a fear of criticism, of making mistakes, the fear of failing, fear of not being good enough, of being rejected or even excluded and often also unconsciously, the fear of being laughed at. I how big the overload and also the suffering pressure for concerning must be. Because also a not decide brings a consequence with itself! A vicious circle for affected persons from which they can get out only with difficulty. The cause of these fears lies primarily in childhood and the early experiences that a young person has made within the family of origin and in the close social environment. Neurobiologists have found out that in insecure people, especially the fear center in the brain is active. We now know that the brain continues to develop throughout life. Learning also takes place into old age. Contrary to the earlier opinion that "You can't teach an old dog new tricks," today we assume that the brain is neuroplastic. Which says that even language learning, changes and behavioral changes are possible until old age.

What is behind the fear to decide:
  • Fear of criticism
  • Fear of making mistakes
  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of not being good enough
  • Fear of being rejected or even excluded
  • Fear of being embarrassed or laughed at

Decision-making anxiety consequences

What consequences can decision-making anxiety have?

The longer the fear lasts to make a wrong decision and remains untreated, the greater the suffering pressure of those affected, also the fear becomes greater! Affected people feel helpless and at the mercy.

The consequences of decision-making anxiety include:
  • Decreasing self-confidence due to negative thought spirals that do not stop.
  • Depressive moods, decidophobia, anxiety disorders, feelings of inner restlessness, tension.
  • Sleep disturbances, problems falling asleep and staying asleep.
  • Increased feelings of insecurity can show up in private and professional life: psychosocial, somatic and economic consequences.
  • Problems in the private sphere, because important decisions are increasingly delayed and the relationship suffers as a result.
  • Problems in the professional environment, frustrations up to loss of work.
  • Increased risk through "self-therapy or self-medication" to give oneself courage in some moments to "come down" or feel better.

Decision-making anxiety and secondary conditions

If the fears are great, secondary conditions can develop. Affected people describe depressive moods, fears that increase to panic attacks or even phobia: Decidophobia. Further the use of alcohol, drugs or medicines, is not to be underestimated! Often concomitant diseases arise exactly from this attempt to compensate feelings of insecurity and doubt. The so-called self-therapy helps for a short time to suppress thoughts, to give oneself courage and to discard fears.

Decision anxiety hypnosis treatment

Deciding whether to have children: Will hypnosis influence my decision?

Hypnosis does not influence your decisions. Quite the opposite. Especially when it comes to having a child or not we are exposed to many different influences. There is the young woman from a very traditional family, whose parents have never seen any other way for their daughter than that she will have a child herself one day. In contrast, there is the young man, son of a single mother, who has seen in his childhood how difficult it can be to raise a child. Other young couples are influenced by friends who are either proud parents or, on the contrary, are enjoying their lives to the fullest without children. All of these experiences influence our choices.

Hypnosis helps with decision-making anxiety and decidophobia

What would you do if you were not afraid of doing something wrong or right? Am I a good father? Is my partner the right one to start a family with? Can I have a child even if I don't want to get married? Can I still enjoy my life with a child? Does life without a child make any sense at all? And - am I even allowed to ask myself such questions? Oh yes, you are allowed to. You are free to shape your life yourself. In making your decision, your only obligations are to your child and your partner. Society, friends, even your employer have no say in this decision. You are free to decide as you wish, and it is precisely this freedom that is frightening. "What would you do if you were not afraid?" This is the question of all questions, and its answer shows us the way. In hypnosis, you can answer this question without a doubt. Because here you not only get to know your fears, you also learn to understand them and to no longer let them influence you.
