Fear of the future symptoms
How to recognize fear of what is coming
Unlike animals, we humans have an idea of the future. We plan things and set goals, we formulate wishes and have thoughts about potential events many years into the future. All of this is quite normal. But there is a difference between a slightly worrying uncertainty or concern and a paralyzing fear of the future. There is a spectrum of intensity, which runs differently with everyone.
A fear of the future can present itself with different symptoms and reactions on the physical and psychological level:
A fear of the future can present itself with different symptoms and reactions on the physical and psychological level:
Physical Symptoms
Physical symptoms can include sweaty hands, heart palpitations and elevated blood pressure when the fear is experienced as acute. In less acute moments, there might be tension and restlessness in the body. At the same time, exhaustion and being low on energy can also manifest itself as a result of underlying fear. Sleep disorders, such as insomnia (see also sleep disorders, sleep problems, chronic fatigue) are widespread. When anxiety escalates into a panic attack, a myriad of physical symptoms caused by panic attacks can occur.
Psychological Symptoms
Psychological symptoms can manifest themselves through anxiety, depressive moods and paralyzing states caused by fear and uncertainty. These states can interfere with taking action in daily life. Constant worries about how things might turn out and pessimistic thoughts about the future will make things seem hopeless and meaningless. Affected individuals might feel that their life has lost meaning. Cyclical, repetitive thoughts about the future and overall dejection might also occur.
A Fear of the future affects how you experience the present
A fear of the future is often trivialized in the social environment. "Yes, we've all been there!”, “I feel the same way from time to time.”, “You just have to keep going!”, “Don't make such a big deal out of it, others are worse off.” These are the types of responses people might get when attempting to speak about their fear of the future. Such remarks are usually not helpful in ending the fear. Affected people describe fears about the future as very stressful and restricting in daily life. Since the agony is not only about the future but it makes itself known in the present, it is experienced as too pervasive and even feels suffocating. This is also reflected in the symptoms: insomnia and other sleep disorders, restlessness and concentration problems, panic and anxiety. Affected individuals are so restricted in their everyday life that the suffering and distress is already very intense when they come to our practice.
Fear of the future self test
Do I suffer from fears and anxiety about the future?
The following questions can be initial clues as to whether you are suffering from anxiety about the future:
-
1
Do you have difficulty seeing anything positive about the future? -
2
Do you experience any of the following symptoms: trouble falling asleep, circling thoughts, feeling weighed down or restless? -
3
Do you have a fear of not being able to "make it"? A fear that may even seem irrational within your social circle? -
4
Do you especially experience fears about the future during quiet moments or when you are alone? -
5
Do you have the impression that some things in life suddenly seem pointless or meaningless?
If you can answer yes to any of these questions and feel restricted in your daily life and living, you should seek medical or therapeutic advice. Please note that questions are always asked broadly, so it is possible that people who are not affected by fear of the future may get a positive result. Not everyone who is worried about the future has a pathological fear of the future.
Fear of the future facts
How widespread are fears related to the future?
Feelings of fear are initially completely normal. Fear can set evolutionary mechanisms in motion that are meant to protect us from negligence or unwise decisions. But when fearful thoughts about the future become so prevalent that they start determining everyday life and the present in a restrictive manner, it becomes difficult to remain present and to enjoy moments of peace and security when they are there. Fears of the future are widespread across all populations. The term "German Angst" describes what is perceived as the typical way Germans behave socially and collectively.

Fear of the future causes
Fear of the future usually begins in childhood and adolescence
Anxiety about the future usually begins in childhood and adolescence. Many children panic when they start school, even more so when they continue into higher education. And even after graduation or before marriage, many people experience intense anxiety about the future, coupled with fears of failure. What all these situations have in common is that they are defined by uncertainty and change. We will have to leave behind familiar paths and learn new ones. These new chapters and situations hold so many opportunities. But those who suffer from fear of the future mainly see the dangers. At Hypnosis Berlin, we will have a look at the worrying situations together with you. We will identify the opportunities and develop strategies to help you avoid the dangers.
Fear of the future consequences
What consequences can fear of the future bring?
The longer fears about the future persist and remain untreated, the greater the suffering of those affected. Confidence and hope decrease, those affected feel helpless through their circling thoughts, dejection and anxiety. All of these states can compound and lead to burnout, depression or panic disorders.
Fears of the future might lead to some of the following consequences:
Fears of the future might lead to some of the following consequences:
- Increased feelings of helplessness and uncertainty in private and professional life.
- Work-related problems and concentration difficulties, which leads to unemployment in severe cases.
- Significant changes in behavior due to emotional and social withdrawal. Individuals in the social circle are often concerned and describe having difficulties connecting with the person.
- Circling thoughts, dejection and listlessness can lead to burnout and depression.
- Increased mental and physical health risks through self-medicating or abuse of alcohol, drugs and medication.
Fear of the future and secondary conditions
Fears about the future are usually accompanied by other symptoms. Additionally, fears that persist over longer periods of time can lead to secondary conditions. This may result in consequential illnesses that can be of a psychological or physical nature. It is not uncommon for those affected to seek help (primarily with their general practitioner) only when they have really severe physical symptoms. This is completely understandable, since it is important to rule out physical causes first. But unfortunately, affected individuals remain untreated for prolonged periods of time, with many visits to the doctor that lead to no findings, before they are able to seek mental and psychological support. It is unfortunate in the sense that many of the symptoms could have been prevented, but fortunately they can be treated and will be taken seriously when you begin your journey at Hypnosis Berlin.
Fear of the future hypnosis treatment
Gain new courage to face life with hypnosis
On the opposing end of fear related to the future is the courage to face life. Feeling rejuvenated, hopeful, full of joy and energy. The courage to live is what we feel when spring lures us into the green and blooming plants with the first warm days, when we would like to jump like little children, when we reach with both hands for what life has to give us every day anew. When the fear of the future disappears, the world becomes more vivid, colorful and beautiful. You can't imagine that now? After experiencing hypnosis, you will see that all of this is possible. I look forward to taking you through that journey and guiding you into new perspectives.
How hypnosis helps to conquer fear of the future
Every hypnosis is different. Every hypnosis session and treatment is as individual as you are. Nevertheless, there are some parallels for all clients with fear of the future. Every hypnosis session begins with making an appointment. Especially for people with a fear of the future, this moment is of crucial importance. Many notice quite immediately that when they make an appointment, the pressure also eases and new hope grows. This is a good sign, because the change already begins with this first step! The main focus of hypnosis in a therapeutic setting involves changing our relationship with fear, impermanence and uncertainty. During hypnosis, vivid landscapes can be created within the subconscious, in which we confront and face our innermost fears from a different point of view. Already during the first session, you will most likely discover a soothing and peaceful feeling of calm. The tormenting carousel of thoughts may take a break. Through the relaxation, which is part of hypnosis, hypnotherapy provides profound support - especially at times when anxiety is high. During hypnotic trance, you have the opportunity to look at your fear and anxiety from a distance - as an observer. You can look at all sides of this fear, even step into it to feel it, without the feeling completely dominating your mind and body. This ability, which you practice during the hypnosis session, remains with you outside of the hypnosis chair.

Smaller topics and issues can sometimes be solved in one session. In particular, hypnosis for smoking cessation takes place in one intensive session. More complex issues that accompany people longer are treated in four sessions on average. Hypnotherapy is to be understood as a short therapy. There are also exceptions where I support clients over several years at their express request.
Usually clients come for a follow-up appointment at an interval of 1 to 4 weeks. I have had very good experiences with a session interval of 1 to 2 weeks. I would like to emphasize here that in my experience this depends on the topic and the client.
