Rapid eye movement (REM)
Rapid eye movement (REM) is a rapid eye movement while the eyelids are closed, which also occurs in hypnosis. Rapid Eye Movement occurs during sleep mostly during dream periods. The eye muscles then move. In hypnosis, Rapid Eye Movement is considered one of the trance signs and is accompanied by theta waves and alpha waves as seen in the EEG. The first feature is usually the fluttering of the eyelids.
