Shazer, Steve de

Steve de Shazer was an American psychotherapist and author. Together with his wife, the psychotherapist Insoo Kim Berg, he developed the solution-focused brief therapy. His work is based on the works of the founder of modern hypnotherapy Milton H. Erickson, the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and the French philosopher Jacques Derrida. Solution Focused Brief Therapy is a form of talk therapy. It is based on the assumption that it is more helpful to focus on solutions and goals than on problems. The miracle question developed by de Shazer and Berg is particularly well known. This technique is used for problem solving and focusing on the future, a time when the problem no longer exists. The miracle question is also used in hypnotherapy, since people in trance are particularly open to creative and creative processes.
