The history and development of hypnosis

Origins of hypnosis: from antiquity to the present day

The roots of hypnosis as a therapeutic method go back thousands of years - to ancient times. For example, in Egypt, people were put into a trance-like state to promote their healing. Ancient Greek and Roman cultures also had techniques that induced states of consciousness similar to hypnosis. Shamanism traditions around the world also used similar techniques. The shaman often entered a trance state to heal, give advice, or make predictions. Despite the lack of scientific understanding, these practices are early forms of hypnosis.

In particular, Clark Hull and his student Kenneth Spence conducted the first experimental studies on hypnosis at Yale University in the 1930s. They demystified hypnosis and declared it to be a normal part of human perception. In the mid-20th century, the British and American Medical Associations recognized hypnosis as a therapeutic technique. From then on, hypnosis was used in various fields such as psychology, dentistry and pain management. His indirect approach, based on metaphors and narratives, influenced modern hypnosis techniques.
